CMAT score not a must for 2012-13

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)-approved business schools are not obliged to accept the CMAT score for admissions for the academic year 2012-13.

According to the Supreme Court order on Friday, Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) cannot be the sole exam for admission to management courses.

B-schools will continue to accept score of other five tests (CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA and JMET which are now replaced by CAT) mentioned in the interim order.

This has given a sigh of relief to many private B-schools which were not enthusiastic about CMAT becoming the single entrance test for management courses in the country. However, the debate for CMAT becoming the sole entrance test is unclear.

The petition was filed by Educational Promotional Society of India (EPSI) and Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS).

Today’s Supreme Court order stated that “As per the interim order passed by this court on 26-7-2011, PGDM institutions may continue to admit students for 2012-13 who have taken CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA and JMET.”

This simply implies that AICTE-approved B-schools are not obliged to accept the CMAT scores for admissions for the 2012-13 academic year.

“The five other PGDM entrance test mentioned in the interim order will continue to be considered for admission for the academic 2012-13. However, it is likely that the practice will continue even after that,” said Professor Masood Ahmed, president AIMS.

Many state universities — including Kerala, Rajasthan and Maharashtra — have already announced that they would do away with their state-level management entrance tests from next year and consider the CMAT scores.

“Earlier, it was said that for MBA admissions for academic year 2012-13, CMAT will be one more option to the existing tests. After that, which practice would be followed is not clear. However different states, including Maharashtra, have decided to discontinue state MBA entrance tests from the next year,” said DY Patil, director of Bharati Vidyapeeth Management School.
